National Read Across America Week began March 2, launching a nationwide celebration that promotes a love of reading and highlights its importance, especially for young learners. Held during National Reading Month in March, this week provides a perfect opportunity to integrate and emphasize reading throughout the school day.
Throughout the week, our elementary schools will host a variety of reading-focused activities designed to strengthen literacy skills and reinforce the joy of reading. In celebration of the week, the Board of Education meeting on Monday, March 2 included a special feature recognizing our youngest readers.
We were delighted to welcome four elementary students who joined us to read a book to our board members. The students paired up and took turns sharing stories, bringing the spirit of Read Across America Week to life and reminding us all of the power of reading.
Thank to the following students for joining us:
- Helene Chaponniere, 4th grade, Riverview Elementary
- Rowyn Hernandez-Cabanas, 2nd grade, Starside Elementary
- Arlo Malloy, 1st grade, Clear Creek Elementary
- Charlotte Urban, 2nd grade, Horizon Elementary
Reading offers profound mental, emotional, and even physical benefits. It acts as a workout for the brain, improving memory, focus, and critical thinking. Reading can reduce stress by up to 68%, lower heart rate, and foster empathy by allowing readers to experience different perspectives. Regular reading expands vocabulary, enhances communication skills, and may even contribute to a longer lifespan. And, of course, it’s fun!
Happy Read Across America Week and National Reading Month!
